New life for old photos with photo restoration service.

Everyone has memories captured in photographs. Each photo represents a moment and time we cherish. Unfortunately, though, these photos come with an expiration date.

Time has no mercy for old things, including old photos, and often our family prints have deteriorated with age. The main causes of deteriorating photographs are bright sunlight and humid air. The best way to protect old family photo prints is to keep photographs away from bright light and use good archival storage materials such as photo albums and picture frames. Never keep pictures in damp or dirty places. Store your photos at an appropriate temperature (the ideal storage temperature is between 55 and 68 degrees).

But if your photos have already deteriorated, photo restoration is great way to bring them back.

Photo restoration can revive old photos by removing scratches and dust, recreating missing areas, fixing creases and defects, repairing tears, repairing damaged image details, enhancing sharpness, correcting contrast and adjusting colors.

What types of issues can photo restoration address?

- Photos covered in scratches and dots.

- Photos damaged by water, stained or with structural degradation.

- Photos faded from sun exposure with a loss of gloss and color saturation

-Torn or creased photos

If you decide to seek restoration of your old photos, you will first need to create a digital version of your picture by scanning it.

You also need to decide whether the scanned image will be restored and printed or shared online so that you can choose the right resolution and file format.

What is a scanner resolution? It is measured in dots per inch (dpi) More dots mean a sharper image.

What is file format? File format refers to the way the scans are saved to the computer. Examples include JPEGs and TIFFs. You can identify a file's format by the extension after the dot at the end of the filename (such as .jpg, .jpeg, .gif or .tif).

Scanning photos for restoration and printing requires different settings than when posting images online.

Scan photos at 300 dpi (at least) to create a high-resolution master. This will give you the flexibility to use the image in different ways later. If you want to scan an image and reprint it at the same size, 300 dpi works best. When scanning photos to post on the Web or to share via e-mail the best choice is to scan the photo at 150-300 dpi.

If you want to print enlargements of your photos scanning makes it easy. To produce a crisp 4" x 6" print from a 4" x 6" scan, set your dpi to 300. If you decide enlarging your old photo from its original size, then a general rule of thumb is to double the dpi with every doubling in size. (For example, to produce an 8.5" x 11" print from a 4" x 6" scan, set your dpi to 2 x 300 dpi, or 600 dpi.)

TIFFs are good for archiving photos. But TIFF files are much larger than JPEG files.

When you have a digital copy of your image you can upload the photo to your online photo restoration studio. The professional artists will restore photos, fix defects and improve your damaged photographs.

All restored images can be stored on your personal computer; they do not take up a large amount of space. Also you can post images to the web or print them.

Photo restoring is a great gift idea. Parents, grandparents and friends will treasure the memories of important occasions such as marriages, graduations, births and birthdays.
