Image problems: cause and resolution

Artifacts on your photos

Artifact is the visible defect in a digital photo.

Photo problems: Flare or bright spot

Cause of flare or bright spot:

Bright light reflects off the inner and outer surface of the lens.

Resolution of image problems:

Use a lens hood. Lens hood is an opaque tube in front of the lens. It is used to shield a lens from stray light outside the field of view and minimize lens flare, which can seriously degrade the image quality. A wide, long hood offer better flare protection than a narrow, short hood.

Use a polarizing filter, the filter, which can block the light polarized in one plane. It is made from a thin sheet of polarizing material which is laminated between two circular pieces of glass and mounted in a frame. Polarizing filter is useful for cutting reflections from water and glass surfaces (windows, sea surface, etc). It can also be used to increase color saturation of blue sky and certain types of vegetation.
There are two basic kinds of polarizers - linear and circular. Linear polarizers work well with manual focus cameras, circular polarizers - with autofocus camera.

Photo problems: spots, stains, dots and lines on the photo.

Cause of spots, stains, dots and line on the photo:

Dirt in shutter or on the lens/filter.

Resolution of image problems:

Brush off dirt from the shutter. Do not attempt to clean your sensor with canned air, compressed air blowers, lens cleaning liquids, or other methods that seem to make sense, but which can damage your sensor. Bulb blowers and swabs intended expressly for sensor cleaning should be used.
Clean the lens. Clean with lens tissue and cleaning fluid. Use one drop of cleaning fluid on a tissue and clean lens in a circular motion starting from the center.
Clean the filter.

Photo problems: JPEG compression artifacts

Cause of JPEG compression artifacts:

Over-compressed JPEG image. JPEG compression is a digital process that reduces the image file size. High jpeg compression level leads to smaller files, but lower quality.

Resolution of image problems:

Shoot in RAW or TIFF format or using the highest available JPEG quality setting. Cameras usually have different JPEG quality settings, such as FINE, NORMAL, BASIC, etc.
If you use a photo editor, save the image in an uncompressed format such as TIFF, PSD, PSP or the highest JPEG quality setting.

Photo problems: noise.

Noise is an unwanted grain pattern that appears in dark areas of the image.

Cause of noise:

High ISO settings. ISO is the light sensitivity of a film or digital sensors.

Resolution of image problems:

Decrease ISO.

Cause of noise:

Low light

Resolution of image problems:

-Use flash

-Turn up light it the room

Cause of noise:

Problems with digital camera. Faulty CCD elements. CCD (Charged Coupled Device) is mechanism that converts light into a proportional electrical current.

Resolution of image problems:

Check your camera's CCD elements.

Cause of noise:

Long exposure time (more than1 second)

Resolution of image problems:

Try to avoid using such long exposures .

Cause of noise:

Flecks of dust on the lens or inside the camera

Resolution of image problems:

Clean your camera

Processing image:

You can reduce noise with special digital image editor program or give it to a professional pictures artist. Our photo designers can do this for you. Just click here to upload your photo and describe what kind of image enhancement you would like us to perform.
